Scottish Natural Heritage were aware that they often had challenging messages to share. They were aware too that people did not always respond well to their correspondence, their reports and other written communications. It was time to tackle the issues of tone of voice and writing style across the organisation.
Working with a strong internal communications team, Cygnus Extra put together a programme which involved consultation with senior managers, workshops with people in a wide range of different roles, training sessions, discussions, debates and more besides.
Over the course of six months the different strands of the project came together to create a new Style Guide for the organisation which has been well-used within SNH and recognised widely as a valuable approach to promoting and encouraging good writing in public sector organisations.
